The Marcus Hook 18th Annual Pirate Festival
And as luck would have it, so is the annual Marcus Hook Pirate Festival on the waterfront in Marcus Hook, PA. The two days rarely collide, but this year Ahoy ye scurvy dogs September 19th is the lucky day!
National Talk Like a Pirate Day was created in 2002 by two buddies, Mark Summer and John Baur, in Oregon who love pirates. They have a prolific Facebook page that is really hopping this time of year with anticipation and over 110,000 followers. It has a lot of fun posts about pirate sayings and tips for celebrating the day. I also picked up on some proper pirate lingo on it too.
Splice the Mainbrace – It means to have the first drink of the day. “Time to splice the mainbrace,” you might (and should) say to your friends whole preparing to open a bottle or two.

Marcus Hook Pirate Connection
The town of Marcus Hook was occupied by Dutch, Swedish and Finnish settlers as early as the 1640s, when it was part of what was called “New Sweden.” In the early 1700s, Marcus Hook’s historical significance was a haven for pirates who plagued the lower Delaware River. Much of Marcus Hook’s historical significance, in fact, comes from its identity as a maritime town. It also played a very important role in the history of the U.S. during the American Revolution.
The legendary land, in the heart of Delaware County, is said to have been where the infamous 18th century pirate Blackbeard, slept, lured lovely maidens and partied till dawn regularly. It is believed that in the early 1700s, Marcus Hook was a haven for pirates and served as a marketplace to sell plundered goods and supplies out of sight of officials in Philadelphia. According to legend, Marcus Hook was also the home of a Swedish woman named Margret, who happened to be the supposed mistress of Blackbeard. While sojourning in Marcus Hook, the notorious pirate is said to have visited Margret at her house, now referred to as the Marcus Hook Plank House. The house is part of the nonprofit’s identity.
The Marcus Hook Preservation Society has been proudly preserving the rich history of the Borough of Marcus Hook since 2004.

Where: Marcus Hook Memorial Park, Delaware Avenue, Marcus Hook, PA
Details: Free admission and free parking. Live music. Period performances and firepit cooking demonstrations. Free photos and experiences with pirates and other roving characters. Carnival-themed fun, food trucks, live music, local crafters, Delco small businesses and much more.
Dress Like a Pirate: Attendees and vendors are highly encouraged to come in full costume to the festival to add to the fun and unique atmosphere.

Philly SkatePlex Talk Like a Pirate Day Skate
In addition, the Philly SkatePlex is hosting its annual Talk Like a Pirate Day Skate on Saturday with two sessions with the fun and entertaining Plex Pirate. Enjoy a swashbuckling good time with Pirate Skate Sessions from 12pm to 3pm and 4pm to 7pm. You can read more about it here.
