Magnificently macabre and most mysterious..the return of Historic Sugartown’s Haunted Lantern Tours!

19th century lore and culture is all the rage these days with the phenomenal success of HBO Max’s The Gilded Age. So much so that vintage cameo brooches are selling like hotcakes on Etsy and eBay! I myself binged through that show gleefully–immersed in the world and breathtaking culture and fashion of Drexels, Vanderbilts, Ascots and, of course, the fictional Marshalls. But, the fact of the matter is that the majority of Americans lived a simpler and more challenging existence than the aristocrats, millionaires (billionaires in today’s dollars) and royals on the hit show.
The curious and challenging existence of everyday life of folks in Victorian America is embraced regularly at Historic Sugartown in Malvern. What is Historic Sugartown? Great question.
Along sleepy Sugartown Road stands the remarkably intact and lovingly restored, 19th-century village of Sugartown. It is truly frozen in time! In the early 1800s, with the American Revolution behind them, Sugartown’s early residents established a school, general store, businesses and meeting places, creating a vibrant crossroads that provided goods and services to its surrounding Chester County farming community.
Fast forward to 2025–and the Halloween season–and locals can once again enjoy the property’s annual Haunted Lantern Tours. Starting Thursday, October 16th join one of Historic Sugartown knowledgeable guides as they lead you through the village by lantern light. Along with Sugartown’s rich history, you’ll learn about the strange world of death and mourning in Victorian America.
