The Betsy Ross House Celebrates Women’s History Month

As Philadelphia gears up for America 250, there’s no better time to explore the stories that shaped our nation. Visit the Betsy Ross House and discover the woman who helped stitch America’s identity.

The Betsy Ross House is celebrating Women’s History Month during the month of March with a dynamic lineup of programs honoring the women past and present who shaped Philadelphia and the nation. As the only historic site in the city dedicated exclusively to the stories of colonial women and their contributions, the Betsy Ross House uses the month to spotlight women’s leadership, labor, and legacy through immersive and engaging experiences.

The month kicks off with the second annual Breakfast with Betsy on Thursday, March 19th, an invitation-only event designed to connect and recognize women leaders from across the region. During the breakfast, Betsy Ross House Director Lisa Moulder will present the annual BetsyAward, honoring a woman who embodies Betsy Ross’s independent, creative, and entrepreneurial spirit.

On Sunday, March 22nd, visitors can dive deeper into Betsy’s story during Meet the Women of the Betsy Ross House, held from 11am to 3pm. This popular interactive program invites guests to encounter Betsy Ross at multiple stages of her life. Visitors will also meet Hannah Lithgow, the wealthy landlord who owned the House; a young Betsy Ross secretly stitching the first flag; and Betsy Ashburn, the remarried upholsterer engaged in revolutionary work for the Continental Army. Meet the Women is included with regular House admission. Donations to support programming are most welcomed.

Throughout the month, weekends will feature free programming highlighting women’s roles in early American history. Programming alternates weekly:

Storyteller Saturdays (11am to 3pm) bring history to life through engaging, short- form storytelling focused on women’s experiences often left out of traditional narratives.

History Maker Sundays (11am to 3pm) spotlight women who worked as entrepreneurs, abolitionists, artisans, and activists in the 18th and 19th centuries. The March 22 History Maker Sunday features the special Meet the Women of the Betsy Ross House.

Hours of Operation and Admissions

The Betsy Ross House is open daily in March from 10am to 5pm. Admission is $12 for adults and $10 for children, with an optional audio guide available for an additional $2. For more information about programs and events leading up to America 250, kindly visit historicphiladelphia.org.
