“The Grange is a magical place during the holidays transporting you back to a simpler time–featuring beautiful decorations and a fantastical train display. We have so many families that have now made Winterfest a family tradition. It is truly special,” Kathy Parkinson, President, Friends of the Grange, Inc.

The piece de resistance of the Christmas season at The Grange Estate is the “Santa Room.” Over 4,000 Santas are meticulously placed and polished around the room. The collection is the passion project of locals Chad and Francine Brooks.

The Grange Estate’s 6th Annual Winterfest returns Saturday, November 29th from 1pm–6pm with a festive day of events, delicious food, dancing and of course, a visit from Santa. Winterfest is the big kickoff to the Christmas season at this historic Delco gem. Every Saturday and Sunday, and a few select Mondays, The Grange Estate property is open for tours.

We went one-on-one with Friends of the Grange Estate President, and our client and friend Kathy Parkinson, to learn more. (BTW: If you love an old-school Victorian Christmas, this is totally for you.)

AroundMainLine.com: Let’s start at the top. Top of the chimney, lol. What are the details on Santa at this event since he is coming a very long way and everyone wants to be there when he arrives?

Kathy Parkinson: Santa Claus will be at the Grange from 2pm to 6pm. There is a $5 donation to get your picture taken with him. The donation goes to Santa’s favorite charity: Delaware County Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation. At approximately 4:45, we will head up to the Long Barn in the parking lot for the Havertones singing our favorite Christmas songs and the tree lighting–afterwards we will head down to the porch so Santa can read the Night Before Christmas. This will conclude our Winterfest activities in a very special way that you absolutely do not want to miss!

AroundMainLine.com: What is the background on the magical room of 4,000+ Santas?

Kathy Parkinson: Chad and Francine Brooks have been collecting Santas for 50 + years. It all began when Chad was stationed in Japan with Army Intelligence. They were able to get a tree and began decorating with Santas. Twelve years ago, they could no longer display the vast collection in their home and The Grange was decorating for Christmas…thus a wonderful partnership was born. Chad asked if he could display some of his Santa collection and the rest is history. Visitors love experiencing this room and the heart and passion the Brooks put into it each year. It takes them almost 5 weeks to move, unpack and assemble everything. There is truly nothing like it across not only Delco–but the Delaware Valley.

AroundMainLine.com: What makes The Grange Estate Winterfest such a magical event?

Kathy Parkinson: People will get a first look at our decorated mansion with 17 trees–as well as our famous train display which is 7 levels and runs multiple trains. Our vintage shop will also be open with unique Christmas decor items and lovely merchandise for everyone on your list. We are featuring Delco’s Orlandi Dance Troop to open the festivities starting at 1pm. Santa will be on site from 2pm to 6pm. The Havertunes, a Haverford High School A Cappella group, will perform at 3pm. We will have Zac’s Hamburgers Food Truck and also be selling our famous hot chocolate, popcorn, and pretzels. Our tree lighting will be after the Havertones perform (around 5pm) and then Santa will read the Night Before Christmas which will end WinterFest.
