Save The Date! The 95th running of The Radnor Hunt Races will take place on Saturday, May 16th. The highly anticipated Main Line tradition is held on the third Saturday of May every spring. Tickets will go on sale to the public beginning Tuesday, March 3rd. Pre-sale tickets for past patrons became available on February 3rd.

This year’s event will mark the final year the Brandywine Conservancy will serve as the sole operator and beneficiary of the Races, which the organization has led for the past 45 years. With an unstable future, Main Liners and local equestrian enthusiasts are anxious to scoop up tickets (and tailgate spots) this year more than ever.

The Radnor Hunt Races have been a beloved springtime tradition on the Main Line for nearly a century—long before the Brandywine became the sole operator and beneficiary of the Races in 1980—and one they hope will continue for many more decades to come. Often attracting close to 10,000 spectators, the organizer and benefactor of the Radnor Races is The Brandywine Conservancy.

The History

The Radnor Hunt, founded in 1883, is the oldest foxhunt in the United States, recognized by the Masters of Foxhounds Association of America. The first Radnor Hunt Races was held in 1928 at Chesterbrook, PA, the former estate of A.J. Cassatt.

In 1980, the Radnor Hunt and Brandywine Conservancy began a partnership spearheaded by Betty Moran and George “Frolic” Weymouth. Under their leadership, the Radnor Hunt Races are Racing for Open Space. For over 40 years, the Brandywine Conservancy has been the sole beneficiary of the Radnor Hunt Races. With over $5.5 million raised, those funds have fueled the Conservancy’s vital efforts to protect open space and water resources in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware. They have also educated millions to the importance of local conservancy. To date, over 70,000 acres are permanently protected including the Radnor Hunt racecourse itself and the surrounding lands.

The Radnor Hunt Races continues to attract the country’s finest steeplechase horses, owners, trainers and riders. A springtime steeplechase racing highlight, it is an absolutely spectacular event featuring thoroughbred horses racing over fences, pony racing, sidesaddle racing and a carriage parade, all taking place on Radnor Hunt’s sprawling 100 acres.

Editor’s Note: With nearly 18 months of advanced notice prior to the 96th running of the Races in 2027, the Brandywine is hopeful that there will be ample time for the leadership of the Radnor Hunt to identify an alternative operator. Brandywine remains committed to helping the Radnor Hunt and any new operator for the event with a successful transition plan.
