Alba’s brand new bar is the coziest setting for the March 7th Wednesday Night Whinos!

Alba’s brand new bar is the coziest setting for the March 7th Wednesday Night Whinos!

Wednesday Night Whinos, AroundMainLine.com’s popular ladies social club, will celebrate our second anniversary on Wednesday, March 7th at Malvern’s Restaurant Alba! With a brand new cozy bar, Alba, formerly a BYO, is now a full service restaurant. Since this Whinos will be a birthday celebration of the founding of Whinos in March of 2010, we have put together a really special evening in conjunction with Executive Chef Sean Weinberg and his lovely wife Kelly (also the owners of Alba).

A Taste of Italy

The theme for the evening will be ‘A Taste of Italy.’ Chef Weinberg will be creatively pairing complimentary appetizers with Italian beers and Italian wines for a gourmand girl’s dream experience! A cash bar will be available as well.

Whinos Attire

As with all Whinos, business casual attire is highly recommended as we gather to meet and network with the region’s top businesswomen and great gals. Absolutely no jeans or sweatpants are permitted. RSVP is not required—we always welcome walk-ins to Whinos—but it does greatly help us to plan accordingly with our generous host, Restaurant Alba.

Featured Female Entrepreneurs

A new concept we are introducing to each Whinos starting with this March event is ‘Featured Female Entrepreneurs.’ We will highlight one or two local business owners or artists as the special guests of the evening. For the March Whinos, our two featured entrepreneurs are local Etsy artist Kristen Stein and Malvern boutique owner Martha Saphier Philpott of Nota Bene Boutique! Both ladies will be at Alba displaying their fashion, accessories and art for Whinos to purchase—along with some very fun giveaways for two lucky ladies.

Wednesday Night Whinos is open to all local women 21 and over, there are no membership fees or obligation. It is free to attend always! Our philosophy is ‘The more Whinos, the merrier!’

Boutique of the Month: Malvern’s Uphome

Linda and Bryce Ritter, of Malvern’s Uphome, are headed to exclusive industry markets in Provence soon to shop for their new Spring inventory!

Linda and Bryce Ritter, of Malvern’s Uphome, are headed to exclusive industry markets in Provence soon to shop for their new Spring inventory!

Uphome Limited, a home furnishings store in Malvern specializing in American and French antiques along with customized, one-of-a-kind pieces, is celebrated as AroundMainLine.com’s ‘Boutique of the Month.’

The shop has been a staple of King Street since 2009, after it relocated from its original Glenmoore location. The spacious, charming two story former bank building originates back to the late nineteenth century.

Owner Linda Ritter’s keen eye for eclectic American design and French country marries perfectly with husband Bryce Ritter’s handmade, custom designed furniture that is beautifully displayed throughout both floors. Bryce was named as one of the top 50 designers in America by Country Home Magazine and was commissioned to design several pieces for Camp David (the Presidential Retreat).

“I think one of the things we have going for us is that furniture making is a lost art. And our customers know we can work with them, use our imagination and design skills along with antique building materials to create something very beautiful and functional,” enthused Linda.

In addition to the vintage furnishings, the shop is ideal for hostess gifts, housewarming presents, handmade jewelry, glassware, linens, home accents, candles, quick pick me ups, and more.

In the rear of the store, their son Kevin recently installed a sample of his beautiful custom kitchen business, Timeless Kitchen Designs. Kevin works with only about a dozen clients a year.

RSVP for the Open House

On Thursday, March 8th Uphome will host a fun, French wine tasting and Open House from 6pm to 8pm. To RSVP to the party on Facebook, click here!

Q & A with Linda Ritter

AroundMainLine.com: Where do you find all your beautiful pieces?

Linda Ritter: Most of our furniture is designed and created by Bryce, but we also buy American and French antiques. I also shop the markets in Atlanta, High Point and New York where I have direct relationships with several of the artists whose work we sell in the shop.

AML: Talk about Bryce’s background and the pieces he is currently showcasing in the store.

LR: Bryce has a civil engineering background and worked in architectural engineering for years. His hobby was building and designing furniture. He started to do it professionally in 1988 and has been doing it ever since!

AML: What makes you standout from other home furnishing stores?

LR: Bryce builds and designs custom pieces based on customer’s real needs (dimension, color) and uses authentic antique doors, windows, and accents that become family heirlooms for our clients.

AML: What are some key tips you can offer someone who is looking to freshen up the look of a room in their house?

LR: Dash and Albert rugs are bright, cheery and can lighten up and change a room in an instant. I love the linens from Pine Cole Hill. Artwork from Sugarboo Designs and Spicher and Company Prints are two additional favorites!

AML: You will be traveling to France soon to search for more gorgeous pieces for the store. Tell us about it!

LR: In March we are headed to the south of France, Provence, where we will shop at small antique markets, brocantes (secondhand markets), and at a major antique event for the trade in Avignon and Montepelier.

The Gables at Chadds Ford is one of the region’s most romantic dining backdrops. The Gables is situated on land that was originally part of a 138 acre land grant from William Penn to Brinton King. Around 1745, a pre-Revolutionary style house was built on the property. This was one of the first homes to be built in Pennsbury Township.

Two of the four original chimneys from the pre-Revolutionary style home are still visible. In March of 2002, the house was placed on the National Historic Register.

In addition to their regular dinner menu, The Gables will be offering specials on Valentine’s Day that include pan roasted halibut, braised beef short ribs and a dark chocolate mousse.

Executive chef and owner Chris Todd prides his restaurant on serving customers with food allergies and intolerances.

Christopher’s restaurant and FEAST, a local allergy support group, will host their first allergy-friendly dinner on Tuesday, January 17th at 5:30 pm. Reservations are required and the dinner will be suitable for adults and children. FEAST (Food and Environmental Allergy Support Team) of the Main Line is a support group for parents of food allergic children.

“Eating in restaurants is difficult for many allergy families, ” said Jean Kintisch, leader of FEAST. “This is a great opportunity to enjoy the experience in a safer environment.”

On this special night, the ingredients of every dish will be listed, Chef Christopher Todd and Jean Kintisch will speak about how to eat safely in restaurants, and participants will enjoy a meal knowing that the kitchen understands the special needs of allergic patrons.

“Our restaurant has always been accommodating to those with special dietary concerns,” said Todd. “Our staff is fully trained to work with all types of food allergies and dietary restrictions. Our menu offers nut-free, gluten-free and soy-free items and we work with each guest to make sure they are taken care of. We look forward to partnering with FEAST for this unique opportunity.”

Space is very limited at the January 17th dinner. If there is enough interest, another allergy-friendly meal will be planned in the near future.

Please call Christopher’s at 610-687-6558 to make reservations. Christopher’s is located at 108 North Wayne Avenue in Wayne, PA. christophersaneighborhoodplace.com.
