Four years ago, Jim Mog started playing around in his backyard with some different barbequing techniques. Friends and family were wowed—so much so they began requesting Mog cater their parties and private functions.

After a conversation with his wife during which they established there was enough of a demand, and combined with research confirming the Main Line was lacking an authentic BBQ-based restaurant, Mog took the entrepreneurial leap to open Jimmy’s BBQ in January of 2009.

Today, the Malvern based-business is thriving and has fulfilled a need for authentic, dry rub BBQ in the western burbs. The meat (pork and brisket) is smoked on the premise with an authentic Ole Hickory smoker for twelve to fourteen hours. “What makes great barbeque is old fashion, slow cooking,” said Mog.

How would you describe Jimmy’s BBQ?

Jimmy’s BBQ is an authentic BBQ joint serving ribs, brisket, pork, chicken and sausage. The focus at Jimmy’s is on outstanding customer service and great food. It is very important to us that you feel like family when you are at Jimmy’s BBQ. The food is simple BBQ done well. We serve dry rub BBQ which means that there isn’t any sauce on the meat. You may choose to put sauce on your food.

What are some of your most popular items/fan favorites?

My favorite, and the one item we get the most compliments about, is our brisket. If a customer hasn’t tried our brisket, we offer them a taste. That’s all it takes to get them addicted to this fabulous piece of meat! Our second most popular item is our smoked bacon. Of course, our pulled pork is the most popular item on the menu. Nothing is more synonymous with BBQ than pulled pork. The biggest surprise to me was how popular the pulled chicken is. The chicken has a lemon pepper, rosemary and brown sugar rub.

What is the secret to great, authentic BBQ?

The secret is taking the time to cook the meat until it is done, usually 12-14 hours for our pork and brisket. You can’t rush BBQ. If the ribs aren’t done, the ribs aren’t done. You have to wait.

You do a lot of catering around the region, what do people usually request for their parties?

The first thing most people request is our portable smoker! Our beautiful 14′ smoker adds a great atmosphere to any party. People who request our catering are looking for a different catering experience. The food and the atmosphere is going to be casual-it’s BBQ. That said, we have done wedding receptions and rehearsal dinners, as well as birthday and graduation parties. We do a lot of festivals too.

Are there any misconceptions about BBQ?

That it can be done with a gas grill in 20 minutes.
