Within a 10-mile radius of the new store, there are already 64,000 people who have Wegmans’ Shoppers Club card.

At last!

Sometimes the impossible just takes a little longer. That’s the case for Wegmans’ new 123,000 sq. ft. King of Prussia store located at the intersection of North Gulph and North Warner Roads, which opened Sunday, May 6th.

It was 1996 when Wegmans first set its sights on one day opening a store in King of Prussia. There were 54 Wegmans stores, at the time, in two states (NY and PA), and just 5 of those stores were in Pennsylvania. The company identified the Greater Philadelphia area as an ideal place for what Wegmans was uniquely positioned to offer: incredible service and selection, restaurant-quality prepared foods, and low prices. In the years since, Wegmans has opened stores in South Jersey, and in Downingtown, Warrington, Collegeville, and Malvern, PA, patiently waiting for the time when a site would come together in King of Prussia.

Fast forward to 2012: There are now 80 Wegmans stores in six states, with 15 in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the list of places finally includes King of Prussia.

“It took a while for us to get here,” says King of Prussia Store Manager Kevin Lang, “so you can imagine how eager we were to open our doors to new shoppers and to those who have traveled the extra distance to shop at our other stores waiting for this one to open.” Within a 10-mile radius of the new store, there are already 64,000 people who have Wegmans’ Shoppers Club card, and new people are signing up every day on the King of Prussia store’s dedicated web site, according to Lang.

<img src="http://aroundmainline.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/wegmans-kop-2.jpg" alt="Wall O’ Beer Wegmans boasts over 800 selections of domestic and imported beer!
Lang and his team of 600 employees (550 new-to-the company) have been working for months to hire and train the best and get the place ready for what is expected to be a very successful 2012.

Executive Chef Chris Happel is part of that team. His focus: The Market Café, which seats 300 indoors and outdoors, including The Pub where food is served to order. “The Pub at this store has double the seating capacity of our other Pubs,” says Happel, “and includes a bar for more than 30 and booth and banquette seating for 80.” A first for Wegmans, debuting at this store, is an outdoor fireplace for dining al fresco.

People’s Light & Theatre presents A Wrinkle in Time, adapted by John Glore from the Newbery Medal Award-winning book by Madeleine L’Engle. The production runs April 26, 2012 – May 20, 2012 on the Main Stage. Resident Director Samantha Bellomo directs.

Long before Katniss Everdeen and Hermoine Granger, author Madeleine L’Engle created the great young female heroine, Meg Murry, in her novel A WRINKLE IN TIME. The novel, which is now celebrating its 50th Anniversary, is as easily relatable to children today as it was to their parents when they first read the book. The timeless predicament of teenage feelings of instability and insecurity, and triumph over great and terrifying obstacles provide an affirmation of the value of individuality and the power of awe and love. John Glore’s streamlined but faithful adaptation uses six actors who transform age, gender, and species to tell the story about the Murry family and their travels through the time-space continuum.

“This is a story about discovering the power of your individuality,” says director Sam Bellomo, who first read this book when she was eight years old. “When I read A WRINKLE IN TIME as a child, Meg’s world seemed very real. It could be mine. It was not a fantasy. She did not walk through a closet and into another world. Instead her world shifted and expanded around her. It opened my mind to a whole new set of possibilities.” Drawing on inspiration from surrealistic artworks of playgrounds, the spare quality of the set design and the innovative use of fabric and lighting creates Meg’s expanding universe.

People’s Light & Theatre is located at 39 Conestoga Road, Malvern, PA 19355. For tickets call 610.644.3500 or visit PeoplesLight.org. A Wrinkle in Time is part of the PNC Arts Alive Family Discovery Series and has been supported by PECO and the Chester County Conference and Visitors Bureau.

People’s Light & Theatre presents Donald Margulies’ Shipwrecked! An Entertainment—The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (As Told by Himself), running March 22, 2012—April 15, 2012 on the Steinbright Stage. Jackson Phippin directs.

Shipwrecked! is a delight-filled traveler’s tale (which may or may not be true) that takes you from the exotic islands of the Coral Sea to Queen Victoria’s garden to the Royal Geographic Society. Fun for ages nine and up, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Donald Margulies has crafted this fast-paced, exciting play based on the stories from history’s Louis de Rougemont. Born in 1844, De Rougemont claimed to have survived 30 years in the Australian Outback before returning to London to tell of his outrageous experiences. While his stories enthralled the nation, Australians booed him, not believing his tales. Margulies’ Shipwrecked! leaves it up to the audience to decide what to believe.

Longtime People’s Light company member Graham Smith plays the role of Louis, while James Ijames (2011 recipient of the F. Otto Haas Emerging Artist Award) and Mary McCool play an assortment of characters. Director Jackson Phippin returns to People’s Light, bringing to the stage his extensive experience working with experimental theatre.

Phippin says, “This is a story of adventure and wanderlust. It is also a story of the imagination. The story flows out of one man’s mind. It moves very quickly at times, changing venues in the blink of an eye. So we’ve decided that our approach needs to be suggestive—transformative—that it needs to be inherently theatrical and playful. We want the audience to imagine with us the suggested reality of these adventures.”

He continues, “Like all plays, Shipwrecked! begins with language and as we read we sense a world. Most times that world is fixed and encumbered by its historical and cultural reality. This piece isn’t nearly as rigid and invites the artistic team to create a special reality that will be highly entertaining. To have the opportunity to create such a special theatrical space and performance style is always to be relished!”

Ticket Information

Uphome Limited, a home furnishings store in Malvern specializing in American and French antiques along with customized, one-of-a-kind pieces, is celebrated as AroundMainLine.com’s ‘Boutique of the Month.’

The shop has been a staple of King Street since 2009, after it relocated from its original Glenmoore location. The spacious, charming two story former bank building originates back to the late nineteenth century.

Owner Linda Ritter’s keen eye for eclectic American design and French country marries perfectly with husband Bryce Ritter’s handmade, custom designed furniture that is beautifully displayed throughout both floors. Bryce was named as one of the top 50 designers in America by Country Home Magazine and was commissioned to design several pieces for Camp David (the Presidential Retreat).

“I think one of the things we have going for us is that furniture making is a lost art. And our customers know we can work with them, use our imagination and design skills along with antique building materials to create something very beautiful and functional,” enthused Linda.

In addition to the vintage furnishings, the shop is ideal for hostess gifts, housewarming presents, handmade jewelry, glassware, linens, home accents, candles, quick pick me ups, and more.

In the rear of the store, their son Kevin recently installed a sample of his beautiful custom kitchen business, Timeless Kitchen Designs. Kevin works with only about a dozen clients a year.

RSVP for the Open House

On Thursday, March 8th Uphome will host a fun, French wine tasting and Open House from 6pm to 8pm. To RSVP to the party on Facebook, click here!

Q & A with Linda Ritter

AroundMainLine.com: Where do you find all your beautiful pieces?

Linda Ritter: Most of our furniture is designed and created by Bryce, but we also buy American and French antiques. I also shop the markets in Atlanta, High Point and New York where I have direct relationships with several of the artists whose work we sell in the shop.

AML: Talk about Bryce’s background and the pieces he is currently showcasing in the store.

LR: Bryce has a civil engineering background and worked in architectural engineering for years. His hobby was building and designing furniture. He started to do it professionally in 1988 and has been doing it ever since!

AML: What makes you standout from other home furnishing stores?

LR: Bryce builds and designs custom pieces based on customer’s real needs (dimension, color) and uses authentic antique doors, windows, and accents that become family heirlooms for our clients.

AML: What are some key tips you can offer someone who is looking to freshen up the look of a room in their house?

LR: Dash and Albert rugs are bright, cheery and can lighten up and change a room in an instant. I love the linens from Pine Cole Hill. Artwork from Sugarboo Designs and Spicher and Company Prints are two additional favorites!

AML: You will be traveling to France soon to search for more gorgeous pieces for the store. Tell us about it!

LR: In March we are headed to the south of France, Provence, where we will shop at small antique markets, brocantes (secondhand markets), and at a major antique event for the trade in Avignon and Montepelier.

People’s Light & Theatre presents the world premiere of Fallow, by Kenneth Lin, running January 11th to February 5th, 2012 on the Steinbright Stage. Jackson Gay directs.

In Fallow, award-winning playwright Kenneth Lin (Intelligence-Slave, Po Boy Tango) explores what holds us to the families we are born into and how we seek new families of our own. Upon discovering a cache of unsent letters, Elizabeth Hayes rushes to rural California on a quest to meet the men who murdered her son, Aaron, a young man who abandoned his Ivy-League pedigree to work as a beekeeper and migrant farm worker. Fallow is a haunting and surprising drama about the love between a mother and son, and their travels through some nearly invisible parts of our country.

“This is the most personal play I’ve ever written. The character of Aaron is based on my own experiences backpacking through China on a Fulbright Scholarship in search of my own identity,” Lin reveals. “Also, as a writer I’m often receiving input from the world and certain things just land. All throughout my life, I can remember hearing tragic stories in the news—a black man who was lynched in Texas, a Latino immigrant in Rhode Island who was beaten. These events deeply affected me and helped to inspire this play.”

In conjunction with the play and its many themes, People’s Light will feature a series of free events to enhance audience members’ experience. The events include a special conversation with Kenneth Lin about the subject of identity, a panel discussion on bees and their impact on our livelihood, and a panel discussion entitled “The Road Not Taken,” featuring members of the community who have taken unusual paths in life.

“Fallow brings up many issues concerning the state of our nation,” Lin continues. “I’m grateful that People’s Light, which is so focused on education and community, will be producing this play.”

Ceramics for Social Change

On Monday, Jan. 16, students, parents, teachers, family and friends will gather on the campus of Malvern Prep to raise money to benefit the area’s homeless population. The 4th annual event is called Empty Bowls, and it combines Malvern’s love of clay with the school’s dedication to community service. On Martin Luther King Day, a designated national day of service, Malvern is seeking to build on the more than $27,500 raised in the first three years of Empty Bowls.

Empty Bowls begins at 7:00 p.m. in Dougherty Hall and is open to the general public. Tickets are $25 per adult and $15 per child ten and under, and are available at www.malvernprep.org.

Empty Bowls is a months-long labor of love at Malvern, and is part of the national Empty Bowls movement, a national organization that has been supporting thousands of these events worldwide since 1990. Members of the Malvern community have created well over 800 ceramic bowls, both in the classroom and during nine open studio days held from October through January. Those bowls will be used at the event to serve a simple meal of donated soup and bread.

Guests choose a bowl to use that day and to keep as a reminder that there are always empty bowls, and therefore hungry people, in the world. Additional bowls are also on sale at the event, along with silent auction pieces donated by students and area artists. All proceeds are donated to Bethesda Project, an organization that works to reaffirm the dignity of our homeless brothers and sisters in Philadelphia.

Empty Bowls is being chaired this year by Malvern Prep seniors Austin Velte of West Chester, Julian Venonsky of Malvern, and Ryan Wheeler of Havertown. “I’ve been involved with Empty Bowls for four years, and I believe it is a great event for the community,” said Velte. “It realizes the strength of Malvern’s art program and applies it for a good cause.”

“Empty Bowls is all about using your talents to help others,” said Wheeler. “We all have talents but it’s what we do with those talents that make us who we are. Empty Bowls instills this in all who are involved and, hopefully, in all who attend the event.”
