People’s Light & Theatre presents the world premiere of Fallow, by Kenneth Lin, running January 11th to February 5th, 2012 on the Steinbright Stage. Jackson Gay directs.

In Fallow, award-winning playwright Kenneth Lin (Intelligence-Slave, Po Boy Tango) explores what holds us to the families we are born into and how we seek new families of our own. Upon discovering a cache of unsent letters, Elizabeth Hayes rushes to rural California on a quest to meet the men who murdered her son, Aaron, a young man who abandoned his Ivy-League pedigree to work as a beekeeper and migrant farm worker. Fallow is a haunting and surprising drama about the love between a mother and son, and their travels through some nearly invisible parts of our country.

“This is the most personal play I’ve ever written. The character of Aaron is based on my own experiences backpacking through China on a Fulbright Scholarship in search of my own identity,” Lin reveals. “Also, as a writer I’m often receiving input from the world and certain things just land. All throughout my life, I can remember hearing tragic stories in the news—a black man who was lynched in Texas, a Latino immigrant in Rhode Island who was beaten. These events deeply affected me and helped to inspire this play.”

In conjunction with the play and its many themes, People’s Light will feature a series of free events to enhance audience members’ experience. The events include a special conversation with Kenneth Lin about the subject of identity, a panel discussion on bees and their impact on our livelihood, and a panel discussion entitled “The Road Not Taken,” featuring members of the community who have taken unusual paths in life.

“Fallow brings up many issues concerning the state of our nation,” Lin continues. “I’m grateful that People’s Light, which is so focused on education and community, will be producing this play.”

The panel will feature experts on bees, including Master Beekeeper Vincent Aloyo, Ph.D. Director of Data Analysis Amy Wilson will moderate.

Ceramics for Social Change

On Monday, Jan. 16, students, parents, teachers, family and friends will gather on the campus of Malvern Prep to raise money to benefit the area’s homeless population. The 4th annual event is called Empty Bowls, and it combines Malvern’s love of clay with the school’s dedication to community service. On Martin Luther King Day, a designated national day of service, Malvern is seeking to build on the more than $27,500 raised in the first three years of Empty Bowls.

Empty Bowls begins at 7:00 p.m. in Dougherty Hall and is open to the general public. Tickets are $25 per adult and $15 per child ten and under, and are available at www.malvernprep.org.

Empty Bowls is a months-long labor of love at Malvern, and is part of the national Empty Bowls movement, a national organization that has been supporting thousands of these events worldwide since 1990. Members of the Malvern community have created well over 800 ceramic bowls, both in the classroom and during nine open studio days held from October through January. Those bowls will be used at the event to serve a simple meal of donated soup and bread.

Guests choose a bowl to use that day and to keep as a reminder that there are always empty bowls, and therefore hungry people, in the world. Additional bowls are also on sale at the event, along with silent auction pieces donated by students and area artists. All proceeds are donated to Bethesda Project, an organization that works to reaffirm the dignity of our homeless brothers and sisters in Philadelphia.

Empty Bowls is being chaired this year by Malvern Prep seniors Austin Velte of West Chester, Julian Venonsky of Malvern, and Ryan Wheeler of Havertown. “I’ve been involved with Empty Bowls for four years, and I believe it is a great event for the community,” said Velte. “It realizes the strength of Malvern’s art program and applies it for a good cause.”

“Empty Bowls is all about using your talents to help others,” said Wheeler. “We all have talents but it’s what we do with those talents that make us who we are. Empty Bowls instills this in all who are involved and, hopefully, in all who attend the event.”

At People’s Light & Theatre through January 8th. Photo by Mark Garvin.

People’s Light & Theatre presents Treasure Island: A Musical Panto, by Kathryn Petersen, with music and lyrics by Michael Ogborn. It runs November 16, 2011 – January 8, 2012 on the Main Stage. Associate Artistic Director Pete Pryor directs.

In Treasure Island: A Musical Panto, Mother Hawkins and Long John Silver return for the holidays with the rascally rabble aboard Ye Olde Blowharde. They sing, dance, stagger, and swim their way through a few of the Seven Seas in search of Billy Bones’ treasure.

Now a holiday tradition, audiences ages 5-105 have been selling out People’s Light’s Main Stage for eight seasons to see the company’s World Premieres of Panto-spins on classic tales. Treasure Island will be the first time People’s Light is reviving one of its most popular productions, adding new material to make it a special experience for all who enjoyed it the first time, as well as newcomers.
Composer and Lyricist Michael Ogborn joined the creative team for the 2007 version of Treasure Island and has co-written with Playwright Kathryn Petersen all of the Pantos since then: Cinderella (2008), Snow White (2009), and The Three Musketeers (2010).

“With this ensemble and creative staff, we all have great ideas,” Ogborn says. “The respect that everyone has for the process that we put together every year is really extraordinary. And it’s a lot of fun. I have a feeling that this Treasure Island is going to be bigger and better than ever!”

WHAT IS A PANTO?

The Panto is a tradition borrowed from England, where almost every town has a Panto during the holiday season. Pantos are a mix between a fractured fairy tale and a variety show, using familiar stories to form the basis for exaggeration, outrageous jokes, and rollicking songs and dances. They incorporate specific elements, including “the dame” (a man dressed as a woman), audience participation (in the form of cheering the heroes and booing the villains), a “messy bit,” candy passed out to the audience, and a “silly song” that inspires an audience sing-along.

TICKET INFORMATION

Treasure Island: A Musical Panto previews on Wednesday, November 16th and Thursday, November 17th at 7pm. The play opens on Saturday, November 19th at 7pm and runs through Sunday, January 8th. Audiences are encouraged to join the artists after each Thursday evening performance for a conversation about the production.

Single tickets range in price from $35 – $45. For tickets, call the box office at 610.644.3500. Special discounts are available for groups of 15 or more. For more information or to purchase group tickets, call 610.647.1900 x134 or email charles@peopleslight.org. Actors, prices, performance dates and times are subject to change. Additional service charges will apply. Contact the box office for more details.

People’s Light & Theatre is located at 39 Conestoga Road, Malvern, PA 19355. For tickets call 610.644.3500 or visit PeoplesLight.org. Treasure Island is part of the PNC Arts Alive Family Discovery Series.

Dr. Keith Laskin is the medical director of Paoli’s Celiac Center.

The holidays are right around the corner and that means family, friends, festivities, and plenty of food. But for those with food intolerances, such as celiac disease, the holidays can be quite a challenge.

It’s hard to imagine that something as seemingly harmless as a piece of bread at a holiday dinner or party could make someone sick. Yet for people with celiac disease, consuming foods containing a protein called gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, and barley, can be very harmful, damaging the small intestine and interfering with the absorption of vital nutrients from food.

“The good news is for people with celiac disease, they can still safely enjoy many of their favorite holiday recipes and traditional holiday foods—it just takes some planning, creativity and communication,” says Nancy Falini, MA, RD, LDN, nationally recognized celiac nutrition specialist and consultant to the Celiac Center at Paoli Hospital.

To learn how to create your own gluten-free holiday celebration, the Celiac Center at Paoli Hospital is hosting “Gluten Free Holiday Entertaining” on Thursday, November 3rd, 2011 from 6pm to 8:15pm in the Hospital’s Potter Room. The event features Nancy as a guest speaker and samples of gluten-free delicacies from local caterers. Guests are encouraged to bring their own gluten-free favorite holiday recipe to be posted on the Center’s website and for a chance to win a prize.

The Celiac Center at Paoli Hospital is Chester County’s first resource created to raise awareness, educate the community, and provide support for patients unable to digest gluten, a common ingredient found in many foods, including bread and pasta. The Center consists of a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including physicians, nutritionists, nurses, pharmacists, and community educators, who campaign to increase community and physician awareness, expand knowledge, and provide support and disease management for patients and their families. The Center has already inspired a variety of gluten-free items to be included on the hospital’s menu and in the cafeteria.

Dr. Keith Laskin is the medical director of the Celiac Center. He is board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine. He earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine and completed a residency and fellowship at Temple University Hospital.

Attendees are welcome to bring a friend or relative along to the November 3rd event. Registration is required. Call 1-866-CALL-MLH or visit mainlinehealth.org/events. Seating is very limited so be sure to RSVP today.

For more information about celiac disease or the Celiac Center at Paoli Hospital, call 1-866-CELIAC-1 (866-235-4221).

For local parents seeking one of the best private academy educations around the Main Line, Malvern Prep is hosting its annual Open House and Academic Scholarship/Entrance Exam on Sunday, October 30th.

Open House is a three-hour program where prospective students and parents can see all aspects of the Malvern Community and have many opportunities to speak with teachers, administrators and coaches. The day will begin for both students and parents at 8:30 a.m. in the O’Neill Center. Following the beginning presentations, students will be dismissed to participate in the Scholarship/Entrance Exam. Pre-Registration for the Scholarship/Entrance Exam is required.

The Open House offers an in depth look at the campus with tours led by students, administrators, faculty and coaches. Parents and prospective students can attend special interest seminars on the middle school curriculum, religion, the arts, and Malvern’s service learning curriculum, college counseling, admissions procedures, academic scholarship /financial aid and more. Families will learn about the extensive extracurricular activities and athletics that Malvern offers and are encouraged to stay for demonstrations by many of the groups. They can also take part in mini classes and departmental presentations on English, Theology, Computer, Languages, Sciences, and the Arts.

Malvern Preparatory School was founded in 1842 by the Augustinian priests as a Catholic secondary and college-level educational institution on what is now the campus of Villanova University. In 1922 the Augustinians moved the secondary school to the Rosengarten Estate in Malvern where it assumed its present name.

Malvern Prep is an independent, Catholic college preparatory school for boys in grades 6 -12. Since 1842, the School’s tradition has been to prepare young men for college, for leadership and for life. Malvern educates its students in a caring environment focused on academics while maintaining balance between spirituality, arts, athletics and activities. Students are learning a foundation of knowledge today so that they may lead with integrity tomorrow.

The annual International Dressage at Devon Horse Show combines world-class dressage competition and the largest dressage/sport horse breed show outside of Europe with international Fall Festival shops, an array of food and the Ladies’ Day Hat Contest. Dressage at Devon will take place from Tuesday, September 27th through Sunday, October 2nd at the Devon Horse Show Grounds.

Dressage at Devon has been the premier North American Equestrian event since its founding by the Delaware Valley Combined Training Association in 1975, and became a separate organization in 2006. It combines world class dressage competition and the world’s largest open breed show with the international Fall Festival show and special activities for the entire family. The six-day event attracts more than 700 horses and 35,000 spectators each year.

This year an exhibition from the Australian horse whisperer Guy McLean promises to draw a large audience. The self-taught Australian has entertained, inspired and educated thousands worldwide in his horsemanship abilities. He is on tour for the first time in the USA with his team of four horses: Hope, Sequel, Pride and Spinnaby.

The Performance Division, which rounds out the week from September 29th to October 2nd, offers spectators the opportunity to see top riders from North and South America and Europe. The horses and riders are judged on their mastery of dressage training and the classes help qualify riders for events like the Olympics, Pan American Games and the World Championships. Locals will have the opportunity to cheer on breeders from Philadelphia and surrounding areas.

Dozens of shops are participating in Dressage at Devon-including Wayne’s popular Blue Horse Boutique!

But Dressage at Devon isn’t all about horses. With the recent interest in hats sparked by the royal wedding in England, the annual Ladies’ Day Hat Contest promises to be bigger and better than ever. Creative entries in the past have included hats adorned with everything from martini glasses to the occasional decorative squirrel. Fascinators are also expected this year!

Sponsored by Feather in Your Cap, The Ladies’ Day Hat Contest will take place on Friday, September 30th at 3pm. All ladies in fancy hats will be admitted to the show at no charge.

Of course, there are also refreshments. “Mimosas on the Midway,” an all-you-can-eat brunch, on Sunday, October 2nd from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Centerline Café, is often the focus of a relaxing day out. Spectators interested in something a little more casual can sample ice cream, funnel cakes, soups, sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, fries, micro-brews and wine and cheese.

Dressage at Devon tickets are $10 for general admission. Children under 12 are admitted free. Reserved seating is $25 on Friday, $35 on Saturday and $10 on Sunday and is available online at www.dressageatdevon.org. General admission is available at the door.

About Dressage at Devon

Dressage at Devon, a 501(c) (3) PA non-profit organization, benefits Thorncroft Therapeutic Horseback Riding Inc., the oldest and largest therapeutic riding program in the nation. Since 1991, Dressage at Devon has raised in excess of $1,000,000 for Thorncroft.
